Learning to Enjoy My Own Company

There’s something I’ve come to really appreciate lately, and that’s being comfortable in my own company. Not in a lonely way. Not in a “no one else is around” kind of way. But in a grounded, content, I’m actually good with this kind of way.
Taking Myself on Dates
I’ve started taking myself on little dates.
Going to the movies to watch the films I love. The ones no one else in my whānau really wants to sit through. Think The Devil Wears Prada 2, those easy, feel-good chick flicks that you can just switch off to and enjoy. And honestly? It’s been great. No negotiating what to watch.
No worrying if anyone else is bored.
No distractions.
Just me, fully enjoying the moment.
Just Me, No Compromise
The same goes for going out to eat.
Sitting down at a restaurant on my own, ordering exactly what I feel like, eating at my own pace. There’s something really freeing about it.
You realise pretty quickly that you don’t need anyone else there to validate the experience. You’re allowed to take up that space on your own.
And you only have to please yourself.
Learning From Solo Travel
I think a lot of this has come from travelling solo.
When you travel alone, you don’t really have a choice. You figure it out quickly. You learn how to navigate new places, make decisions on your own, and trust yourself.
But more than that, you learn that your own company is actually enough.
You start to enjoy the quiet moments. The independence. The ability to move how you want, when you want.
That confidence doesn’t just stay in travel. It follows you home.
Comfort in Your Own Space
There’s a quiet confidence that comes with being okay on your own. Not needing constant noise or company. Not filling space just for the sake of it.
It doesn’t mean you don’t value your people. I absolutely do.
Just it just means you’ve built a relationship with yourself that feels solid.
And that changes everything.
And On That Note…
I’m getting the “please turn off your mobile phone” notice, so I’m off to enjoy my movie.
Have a good one, whānau. 🖤
That’s all lol
